UPDM 16.9 New and Noteworthy

1. Service Oriented Modeling Improvements
2. Model conversion between different Enterprise Architecture Frameworks
3. SysML toolbars in UPDM diagram pallets
4. Joint Conditions Library support
5. Usability Improvements
6. Performance Improvements
7. Other Improvements

1. Service Oriented Modeling Improvements

1.1. SvcV-6 table diagram support

A new DoDAF2.0 diagram named SvcV-6 is now supported. This is a table diagram representing Service Channels specified between Service Providers and Service Requesters and the information Service Channels convey.

To create this diagram, you have two choices:

  • From the main menu, select Diagrams > UPDM SvcV Diagrams > SvcV-6 Services Resource Flow Matrices.
  • From the UPDM SvcV Diagrams toolbar, select SvcV-6 Services Resource Flow Matrix.

1.2. Automatic Service Channel creation

You can now add a Service Channel to a Needline, Resource Interface or System Connector automatically using the Service Channel creation wizard.

To open the Service Channel creation wizard, you can do one of the following:

  • In the SvcV-6 diagram, on the table toolbar, click the Add New button.
  • Select a Needline, Resource Interface, or System Connector and on the smart manipulator click New Service Channel.

1.3. SvcV-3a matrix diagram improvements

The SvcV-3a matrix diagram, representing Service Channels between Service Providers and Service Requesters, has been refactored and now can be edited. You can create new Service Channels as well as modify and remove existing ones.

2. Model conversion between different Enterprise Architecture Frameworks

When switching between UPDM perspectives, you will now be asked whether or not to convert your model according to the Enterprise Architecture Framework, which is represented by the selected UPDM perspective.

You can also convert your model by selecting File > Convert To > DoDAFDoDAF2.0/ MODAF.

3. SysML toolbars in UPDM diagram pallets

You can use SysML toolbars, when creating UPDM models with SysML elements, since SysML Requirements, Block Definition, and/ or Internal Block diagrams toolbars have been added to the pallets of certain UPDM diagrams.

These diagrams together with appropriate SysML diagram toolbars are shown in the table below.

UPDM diagram SysML diagram toolbar
OV-2 Requirements, Block Definition
OV-2 Internal Internal Block
SV-1 Requirements, Block Definition
SV-1 Internal Internal Block
SV-2 Requirements, Block Definition
SV-2 Internal Internal Block
StV-1 Requirements
CV-1 Requirements

It is possible to set the SysML toolbars to expanded or collapsed by default, when creating a new project.

4. Joint Conditions Library support

A new Joint Conditions Library has been added. The library supports physical, military, and civil locations, where joint tasks can be performed; hence you can use it, when selecting Locations.

5. Usability Improvements

5.1. Automatic Instantiation Wizard

You can now instantiate model elements and create the selected type diagrams to represent the instances using the Automatic Instantiation Wizard.

To open the Automatic Instantiation Wizard, select the typical architecture elements you want to instantiate or their shapes on a diagram, right-click on them and from the shortcut menu select Create Instance. The picture below shows the third step of the Automatic Instantiation Wizard.

5.2. Resolved information convey problem in OV-5 and SV-4 diagrams.

In OV-5 and SV-4 Activity diagrams, Flows interrupting Activity Nodes are no longer obstacles to convey Operational Exchanges and Resource Interactions.

5.3. Editable Resource Interaction Matrix (SV-3 diagram)

The Resource Interaction Matrix can now be edited. You can create new Resource Interactions as well as modify and remove existing ones.

5.4. Improvements for creating OV-3 and SV-6 diagrams

  • Included rows without Flows

The rows representing Needlines, Resource Interfaces, or System Connectors that do not realize any Flow (Operational Exchange, Resource Interaction, or Data Exchange) are now included in OV-3 and SV-6 diagram tables. These rows are highlighted, and the values are displayed only for the Needline/ Resource Interface/ System Connector IDs, names, and Nodes/ Resources.

You can show or hide these rows as well as the rows with the realized Flows using a new filter named Show Rows.

  • Possibility to add a new Exchange/ Interaction

A new button named Add New has been added to the table toolbar for both OV-3 and SV-6 diagrams. It opens the Operational Exchange/Resource Interaction/ Data Exchange creation wizard.

5.5. Automatic Creation of SV-7 Actual Measurements table diagram

The SV-7 Actual Measurements table diagram can now be generated simply from an existing SV-7 Typical Measurements table diagram by clicking the Evaluate Measurements button in the table toolbar.

As it is depicted below, there is a row created for each Actual Measurement in the generated table, allowing you to type measurement values for the selected Actual Measurements.

5.6. Actual Measurements in element's Specification

After assigning a new Measurement Set to the Measurement Types property in an element's Specification window, a new property group containing the assigned Measurement Set properties is added in the general pane of the element's Specification window. You can type Actual Measurements right in the element's Specification window.

5.7. New default validation suite

The default validation suite for all MODAF, DoDAF, and DoDAF2.0 projects has been changed to "UPDM Constraints". The other default validation settings are shown in the Validation dialog's screenshot below.

5.8. New filters for selecting producing and consuming Activities and Functions

To make activities' and functions' management more usable, the additional filters have been implemented to filter the Composite, TOP most, Atomic Activities in consuming and producing Activities and Functions dialogs.

  • filter allows the selection of the Activities or Functions that are the composite parts of the directly performed Activities or Functions.
  • filter allows the selection of the TOP most Activities or Functions.
  • filter allows the selection of the Activities or Functions that are the composite parts of the other Activities or Functions and do not have composite parts themselves.

For more concrete element selection, use different combinations of these filters.

6. Performance improvements

Memory footprint after starting MagicDraw with UPDM has been decreased by 50%.

7. Other Improvements

  • In the relation's Specification window, names of the properties that represent connected elements have been changed from UML names (e.g., "Client" and "Supplier", "Source" and "Target") to more meaningful names (e.g., "From" and "To").
  • After setting the SysML Compliance Mode property to true, all the existing model elements will be affected. In previous versions, only the newly created elements were affected.
  • The EndDate property value now can not be earlier than the StartDate property value.
  • The derived properties, such as Carried Item, Implements, Implemented By, Acts Upon, Subject, Functions Upon, Filled Post, and Filled By, are now editable.
